“In my artistic research, I move towards two extremes. The first is almost Zen, where painting is the resulting climax of the mind and sensation. The second is an exuberant and generous spontaneity, the multiplicity of rich distinct powerful colors; to lose oneself in the infinite. In both cases, the commitment is to lose oneself totally in order to give.” J.M.

Painting: return to white considered as space; from 1983 onwards Miotte occasionally works on the white canvas again, looking to synthesize these different techniques.

“Miotte’s art has been considered close to the Abstract Expressionists, and he certainly is abstract, however, one must stress his independence, his expressive power and his joie de vivre. A few critics have rightly associated him with choreography, the movement of dance and ballet but I would also like to remark upon his affinity with Chinese calligraphy, in the sense that his aim and his philosophy is not to reproduce nature, but to capture movement, existence
and life in all its different guises. If a few artists attain this in part, Miotte’s work opens wide the space for reflection. In his work, spontaneity coexists with passion and discipline.” Hian Tan Swie, National Museum of Singapore.
